Why Do People Love Horror films?

Why Do People Love Horror films?

Typically, when picking out a movie, audiences want something easily digestible, fun and has a little bit of something everyone watching can enjoy. So, why can’t it be a horror movie? Too scary? Too much blood? Maybe you’re tired of the predictability scary movies all seem to share. Horror is a much broader genre than most people assume. Not every horror film is scary and not every horror film has a mass amount of gore, some have none at all.

One of my favorite horror films is actually rather tame and wouldn’t even be described as ‘horrific’. The Others is a paranormal horror film that uses the element of horror as a vehicle to explore the line separating life and death. Although there are creepy moments throughout the film, it’s main focus isn’t to scare, it's to develop the story these characters are in. Not only is it an easy watch but it’s also a stunning film overall.

I believe, since horror is so broad, there is a film in the genre for everyone. You will often hear horror categorized more neatly under their sub-genres such as slashers, found footage, paranormal, creature features, cosmic, the list goes on.

There are also horror films that are a direct parody of your typical scary movie troupes. Such as Scream, Cabin in the Woods and, the more notorious, Scary Movie franchise. This subgenre of horror is ironically perfect for those who have a disdain for the genre.

  1. Hello Izzie! I really enjoyed reading your interest on horror movies. I myself enjoy horror movies. One of my favorites are the conjuring, veronica, hunting of the hill house, and many more. Although, I always end up getting nightmares the day after lol. Overall, thank you for sharing your interests!

  3. This was a great argument to tip my toe back in to horror movies. I actually really love the non slasher ones that are just more psychological than jump scare. I put "The Others" on my list to watch a while back , and your post makes me wanna watch it once and for all.
I find comedies and horror to be very similar actually. The same challenges of public misunderstandings. Especially when the comedies are very "black" or "slapstick". There's an art to the emotions they're conveying.
    Nice post. Keep it up.

  5. Hello Izzie, my sisters and I love watching horror films. We prefer paranormal, but we do enjoy slasher movies once in a while. I agree with the idea that they are so predictable, but I think that makes a good movie.

  6. Hi Izzie, I agree that horror movies include a variety of movies, so anyone can find one. For me, I enjoy suspense and being suspicious of what is going to come next, which is why I enjoy scary movies. However, movies like the “Scary Movie” franchise is also one of my favorite series.

  7. I'm actually really glad to see a post like this. I concur with the idea that horror movies are very subjective and different in nature. While one person might think the original "It" movie is scary, another person, or in this case, alot of people would think this movie is too cheesy. A personal favorite of mine is "Skinamarink" since there's no cheesy jumps or any other lame horror tropes. Instead, it's just this completely unnerving movie that just makes you feel uncomfortable throughout the entire thing with a plethora of tension.
